Little Pines Academy Four-year-old Class Curriculum encompasses the Social and Emotional Skills, School and Fine Motor Skills, and Academic skills that will not only give your child confidence but also nourish their desire to learn. We use multiple research based curriculums to teach Literacy and Phonics including LetterLand for early reading skills and Learning Without Tears to master writing composition. Basic Sight Word Identification is introduced in March. Our Four-year-old students participate in engaging whole group lessons helping them master math skills such as number identification to 30, rote counting to 50, comparing and ordering numbers and sets, tally marks, basic addition and subtraction, and so much more! The four-year-old class dives deeper into monthly thematic Social Studies/Science Units exploring our surroundings and sparking questing skills. Our students experiences hands-on learning through centers, small group mini-lessons, and teacher facilitated independent exploration.

~Progression Reports will be sent home with four year old students in January and May. Progression Reports for the four-year-old class include Social and Emotional Skills, School and Fine Motor Skills, and Academics. Parents may ask for an initial assessment to be completed in August if you believe your child has mastered all letters of the alphabet. Letter mastery includes: identifying the uppercase and lowercase version of the letter, identifying the sound it makes, and the correct formation when writing.  Please contact Administration if you believe your child has mastered all letters of the alphabet prior to the first day of school so he/she may be assessed.

FAQ: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 4YO PROGRAM AND PREK?

Our 4YO class is primarily 4YO’s although we will have some students turning 5. The PreK class is a mix of age 4 and age 5. Both classrooms use Letterland as the curriculum and both teachers can scale the difficulty of the lessons down or up to better accommodate each individual student. Students can go straight from either the 4YO program or the PreK program to Kindergarten and be successful. However, the PreK program has a little more Kindergarten prep. It’s not uncommon for children with July – September birthdays to enroll in a 4YO program after the 3’s as opposed to going straight to PreK, to prevent them from being the very youngest in their Kindergarten class. For more questions about choosing between our 4YO Program and our PreK Program, please contact us at office@littlepinesacademy.com.
